Using a LinkNYC Device for Free Phone Calls

If you are soft spoken or simply unwilling to scream your conversations into public space then LinkNYC’s free phone call feature might not be for you. Speech-impaired individuals, for that matter, would likely have no use for Links, as the devices do not appear to have any way to connect a TTY/TDD device. Recorded with a Galaxy Note 5 the sound quality in this video does not quite do justice to how freakin’ loud this guy was yelling, but you get the idea. We’ve come a long way from enclosed phone booths and partially enclosed payphone enclosures, which offered some semblance of privacy when making calls from public telephones. With progress, of course, comes compromise. The rugged, reliable sound quality of the landline has been largely usurped by the squeaky, intrusive call quality of cell phones and VOIP connectiions — I for one can barely stand to talk on the phone any more. This man’s call ended soon after I spotted him, when it looked like the person he was yelling at hung up on him. Sounds like someone stiffed him out of $500.
