Donald Duck: The Flying Phone Booth

Superman is not the only cartoon character who steps in to phone booths.

“The Flying Phone Booth” follows Donald Duck on an interplanetary adventure in which aliens blast our hero into space in a specially-built rocket-powered phone booth.

The story gets going with Donald Duck patrolling his home town of Duckburg. He is on a vigilante-style quest to be the Paul Revere of the 20th century. You see he wants to be the first to report an alien invasion.

Naturally enough, aliens appear soon after Donald starts looking for them. Donald excitedly runs to a phone booth to report his first sighting. The alien looks on in confusion, photographing Donald inside the “glass cage.” The confused alien returns to his planet to share the pictures with his boss.

The authorities quickly respond in force, with several police cars and what look strangely like a couple of F-117A Stealth Fighters. This comic was published in 1968, over a decade before the F-117A first “appeared” (haha) in military use.

The aliens sped away before the police arrived, leading them to conclude that Donald Duck was, well, a quack.

Nevertheless, the indefatigable Donald resumes his patrol. The next night he sees the alien craft again. Unaware that he’s been set-up he plays it cool, stepping into what appears to be another phone booth.

Donald soon discovers that this is a rocket phone booth, planted by aliens who blast him into space. Donald, punning some telephone humor, describes this flying phone booth as a “long distance missile.”

More phone booth fun awaits in this short comic. But I don’t want to offend the copyright police (or the space aliens), so I’ll end this synopsis here. To find out how this intergalactic phone booth adventure ends just find yourself a copy of Walt Disney’s “Donald Duck: The Flying Phone Booth.”
